Art Sung – Erik Chisholm: A Scottish Modernist with a Highland Heart tells the remarkable story of Scottish composer, performer and impresario, Erik Chisholm (1904 – 1965) through songs, piano music, dance, and Chisholm’s own words, read by an actor. In addition, music by composers whom he invited to perform in his concert series in Scotland in the 1930s is featured, such as Bartok and Sorabji, and fellow Scotsman, Francis George Scott. Chisholm’s collaboration with dancer Margaret Morris is also celebrated in a short, choreographed excerpt from the ballet, “The Forsaken Mermaid”. The bespoke visual imagery that enriches the narrative and is projected throughout the recital takes its inspiration from the vibrant Scottish Art scene of the interwar years, as well as Scotland’s ancient Celtic heritage.

Art Sung - Jane Bathori: A Dove at the Vieux Colombier

Mezzo-soprano Jane Bathori dedicated her life and talents to promoting the music of her contemporaries: Debussy, Ravel and Satie. The high point of her career was the rare opportunity to direct the Théâtre du Vieux-Colombier in Paris during the Great War. Her artistic initiatives were a godsend to many composers, such as Caplet and Hahn who were at the front, and she supported the emergence of ‘Les Six’. The theatre buzzed with music of all genres from mediaeval to contemporary as well as many inter-art collaborations. ‘Art Sung- Jane Bathori’ brings to life a slice of forgotten history through music, narrative and artwork, and pays tribute to Jane’s vivid sense of determination to contribute musically to the war effort.
